The authors used a global geospatial analysis of 2017 data to examine the environmental pressures (greenhouse gas emissions, freshwater use, habitat disturbance, and nutrient pollution) asserted by the production of aquatic (marine and freshwater) and terrestrial foods. Almost 50% of terrestrial food’s footprint comes from five countries. Globally, almost 10% of the overall environmental footprint of food comes from aquatic sources, despite it only comprising 1.1% of food. The rankings of foods by cumulative pressure (per unit of production) changed drastically depending on the country. The authors conclude that this study supports initiatives that promote lower-impact foods and systemic restructuring necessary to sustainably feed humanity.
