Summary
Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU), aims to provide high-quality statistics and data on Europe. In partnership with National Statistical Institutes and other national authorities in EU Member States, Eurostat produces European statistics through the European Statistical System (ESS). The EU annually reports its air pollution data for the previous two years as a party to the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP). The data covers various air pollutants, and is consistent with national inventories from EU Member States. Eurostat re-publishes this data, which is produced by the European Environment Agency (EAA). The EU emission inventory report from 1990 to 2019 excludes data from the United Kingdom, so Eurostat refers to it as EU-27 instead of EU-28.
The dataset includes a wide variety of source sectors for air pollutant emissions, such as petroleum refining, manufacturing, aviation and road transport. Specific to the food system, data is available for the following sectors: agriculture/forest/fishing activities, manure management (e.g., dairy cattle, other cattle, sheep, and pigs), animal manure applied to soil, urine and dung deposited by grazing animals, and farm-level agricultural operations.
The 16 air pollutants can be filtered by type, including nitrogen oxides, sulphite oxides, and ammonia. This information is available for various members of the EU and covers the period from 2011 to 2021, expressed in tonnes.
Eurostat also offers a user-friendly data visualization tool featuring line graphs, bar graphs, and a geographic map to easily track and explore the trends and changes over time.
