The authors evaluated the sustainability of countries’ aquaculture industries by developing a food-energy-water-carbon (FEWC) composite sustainability index. At a global level, the overall sustainability score was “low”. At the country level, almost all countries scored in the “relatively low” range for overall sustainability while 80% had at least two FEWC areas in the “low” range. China contributed the most to the environmental impacts of global aquaculture, accounting for more than 50% of total water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
