In the context of growing industrialized livestock and poultry production in China, this review article examines the pollutants emitted by concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and their consequences for CAFO workers, communities, and the food system. Pollutants include gases, bioaerosols, antimicrobials, and animal waste, which find their way into soils and water sources. The authors recommend controlling the use of veterinary drugs and feed additives, improving the methods to treat manure produced by CAFOS, and improving public health by avoiding “high-meat diets”.
