Multitemporal remote sensing images and geographic information of coastal Southeast Asia found that the total area of aquaculture ponds within 15 km of the coastline was 2.6 times larger in 2015 (23,245 square kilometers) compared to 1990. Vietnam saw the largest increase over this time, followed by Indonesia, Thailand, and Myanmar. Additionally, from 2000 onward the expansion of aquaculture ponds shifted from outlying to edge areas. The authors identify policies associated with intensifying local fishing as the main cause of this rapid expansion that, in turn, was driven by economic globalization. They call for local governments to address the sustainable management of aquaculture to mitigate the environmental impacts of coastal aquaculture (mangrove reduction and water pollution) while supporting the role it plays in family income.
