Summary

This article is behind a paywall. It has been included in the database and summarized below solely based on the content of the abstract.

This study surveyed 502 Americans to quantify their preferences about farming methods and the suffering imposed on different species. Using respondent data, the authors created a species-adjusted measure of suffering-years (SAMYs). 30% of respondents said that animal suffering should be taken into account just as much or more than human suffering. The estimated 2016 suffering burden for farmed animals in the United States who were subjected to poor genetics and cramped living conditions was 66 million SAMYs for pigs, 156 million SAMYs for cattle, and 1.3 billion SAMYs for chickens.
