In this study, the author aims to “unsettle” the divisive debates surrounding “alternative food networks” (AFN; such as “grass-fed beef”) where animal agriculture emphasizes AFN’s animal welfare and critical food studies and animal studies labels these claims as an “ethical facade for violence against animals”. Using interviews with farmers in Ontario, Canada, who raise grass-fed cows (i.e., produce “grass -fed beef”), the author explores farmers’ ethical perspectives, the emotional dynamics of farmers’ relations with cows, and the “challenges and contradictions” of “farming grass-fed beef”.
