Summary

The FAO provides data for member countries’ food supply during a specified reference period for the type and availability of food sources. According to the FAO, data are compiled yearly, mainly with country-level data on the production and trade of food commodities

Using these data from the FAO, Our World in Data presents the evolution of daily per capita protein supply in various countries, both in quantity and composition: animal-based and plant-based. According to OWD, the consumption of both protein sources has increased in most countries, and in relative terms, animal-based protein has increased over plant-based. The data subset used for this analysis is available by clicking the Downloaded tab on this chart.

*Note: according to the FAO, geographical comparisons are limited due to different methods in each area. Additionally, the FAO states there is fairly good comparability for shorter time periods, but that full comparability cannot be expected for very long periods (i.e., from 1961) due to changes in product definition and classification.
