The authors use a life-cycle assessment to identify the primary sources of environmental impacts (using six categories from the ReCiPe framework) along the production process (from birth to arrival at the slaughterhouse) for pigs in small scale intensive systems in China. Feed production accounted for 56-95% of the environmental impact, depending on the impact category, with maize being the primary contributor. The “grower-finisher” stage of production contributed more to impact than other stages. The authors provide suggestions for reducing the environmental impacts of raising pigs for food.
