The authors created a high-resolution drainage map to examine biodiversity patterns for all Chinese freshwater fish (more than 1600 species). They found relationships between the spatial distribution of various biodiversity characteristics (e.g., species richness). Areas containing high levels of biodiversity characteristics also overlapped with areas disrupted by human activity. Protected areas only contained less than a quarter of species. The authors suggest expanding China’s protected areas, with a particular focus on those with small to modest river reaches, and associated lakes, from the northeast to southwest.
