Over the course of one year, the authors examined 411 Danish dairy cows selected for “culling” just before transport from the farm to the slaughterhouse. The findings raised concern about the threshold set forth in the European Regulation for determining fitness for transport. Specifically, three quarters of cows had at least one abnormal clinical finding, with 31% deemed lame, 20% showing signs of mastitis and 22% having what were classified as “non severe” wounds.
