Summary

This article is behind a paywall. It has been summarized below based on the content of the abstract.

The authors generated “spatially explicit estimates” for worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions spanning the production and consumption of plant-based and animal-based foods in (and around) 2010. GHG emissions resulting from animal food products constituted 57% of total global food system GHG emissions, nearly double the 29% attributed to plant-based food products. Foods that contributed the most to their respective categories were beef (25%) and rice (12%). Areas emitting the most production-related GHGs were South and Southeast Asia and South America.
